| Latvia is divided administratively into 26 “rajons”, each named after the largest town in the area. As a legacy from Soviet days, most bus services in each region are provided by one company, and there is virtually a separate company for each region.
In addition the six largest towns in the country are “self-governing municipalities” but this has no effect on bus operations except in the Riga region (see below) The regions and their bus operators are REGION - BUS OPERATOR Aizkraukle - Aizkraukles ATU Aluksne - Vidlatuato Balvi - Balvi RAU Bauska - AIPS CESIS - CATA Daugavpils - Daugavpils AP Dobele - Dobeles AP Gulbene - Gulbenes AUTO Jekabpils - Jekabpils AP (JAP) Jelgava - Jelgavas AP (JAP) Kraslava - see Daugavpils Kuldiga - Mobile A Leipaja - Leipajas AP Limbazi - see Cesis Ludza - Ludzas ATU Madona - Madonas CB Ogre - Ogres Auto Preili - see Jekabpils Rezekne - Rezeknes AP Riga - special case – see below Saldus - Saldus AP Talsi - Talsu Autotransports Tukums - Tukuma Auto Valka - see Valmeira Valmeira - VTU Ventspils - Ventspils Reiss All these operators run the full range of services, from local town services, regional routes (out of town but wholly within region), interregional and, where appropriate, international. All of these operators run into Riga, but many of them have completely different fleets on their local routes from the vehicles which can be seen in Riga. Riga is a special case in many ways. Firstly the large “self-governing” town of Jurmala lies within the region, and this has it’s own operator ATF Jurmala SV. Also, the local and regional services are run by Rigas Satiksme, whereas the inter-regional and international services are run by a completely separate operator Nordeka. A number of operators run minibus services in Riga and the surrounding area. Riga also has a fair number of independent operators on “regional” services, some of which are quite sizeable. The main ones are Ekspress Adazi – from Riga to Adazi and Carnikava Rigas Taksometras Parks (RTP) – mainly minibus routes but full sized vehicles used on a Riga- Olaine route. Galss Bus – from Riga to Salaspils Leda SL – Riga to Pinki. Also minibus route in Jurmala. Blagovest Tur - Riga to Kalnciems There are also others which run less frequently Significant independent operators outside Riga include SIA Migar – regional routes based on Jelgava. Broceni Cels – local routes between Saldus and Broceni. This page is intended to illustrate a representative sample of all these operators, except for Rigas Satiksme which has its own page. Where possible I have tried to show both the type of vehicles which are used on local and long distance services. The “major” operators are shown in alphabetical order, followed by the independents, and a few miscellaneous vehicles at the end. These photos have all been taken since 2003 and, as far as is known, the vehicles can still be seen today. |
